13YO Runaway Spent 11 Days in the Subways

stevencloud:

Day after day, night after night, Francisco Hernandez Jr. rode the subway. He had a MetroCard, $10 in his pocket and a book bag on his lap. As the human tide flowed and ebbed around him, he sat impassively, a gangly 13-year-old boy in glasses and a red hoodie, speaking to no one. (Via NY Times)

If there’s a modern day Dos Passos he’s writing this boy’s story.

“ Looking out the window was like looking down into water. The trees in the square were tangled in blue cobwebs. Down the avenue lamps were coming on marking off with green shimmer brickpurple blocks of houses; chimney pots and water tanks cut sharp into a sky flushed like flesh.

If you write a “book about New York” and you don’t manage to mention water tanks, I don’t believe you’ve ever actually been here. You don’t have to do it as poetically as Dos Passos, but c’mon.

How far haven’t we come?
