“ The shell-bursts from the Fascist anti-aircraft guns dotted the sky like cloudlets in a bad water-colour, but I never saw them get within a thousand yards of an aeroplane. When an aeroplane swoops down and uses its machine-gun the sound, from below, is like the fluttering of wings.

Homage to Catalonia (via unburyingthelead)

My favorite Orwell is his non-fiction.

“ You can let people do anything they want, say anything they want, have a wide-open society — as long as no one seriously threatens to upset the golden applecart of power and privilege. Finally getting around to reading Homage To Catalonia and this seems to have been true in 1930’s Spain as well, at least for the Communists (while the Anarchists and Socialists seemed to honestly want revolution)

the anniversary of the bombing of Hiroshima is as good a day as any to remember Guernica. This video is a 3-D exploration of Picasso’s Guernica by Lena Gieseke (better quality here). The bombing of Guernica (1937), carried out by the Nazi Luftwaffe on behalf of General Francisco Franco in the Spanish Civil War, is one of the first aerial bombings of a civilian population carried out in modern warfare. To me, Picasso’s work is a terrible monument and herald to the age of modern state sponsered terrorism of which Hiroshima is a sad example.
