there is something fundamentally nuts about a media-sphere in which SOPA etc gets vastly more play & protest than eternal imperial war. This is not to say you can’t care about both.

Also strange is the way in which tumblr Google etc are mobilizing protest. You gotta ask, why? In other words: cui bono? I’d wager they aren’t doing it for our sake.

Another review that got taken down recently:

The Buckhorn Golf Course 36 FM 473, Comfort, TX 78013
   - Dec 2, 2011
This place is a real gem. Just imagine the scene: The Buckhorn Golf Course opens up before you, revealing layer upon layer of green space — caddies scamper and prance hither and thither like little faeries or gnomes, while smartly dressed men and women hover over them swinging clubs and, through casual chats and quibbles, slowly unravel all the world’s problems in a dreamy state somewhere between the sublime and the pacific, while the dark shadow sharpens its teeth and stalks the land in a lumbering and heaving search for prey. Now, don’t get me wrong, there’s no monster here. That’s ridiculous. And there’s no loosed zoo animal or rabid dog. The dark shadow that stalks players and staff alike is not a chimera or mythical beast, but simply a kind of enduring guilt and remorse, the kind that catches you just at the most mundane of moments. You might be listening to your best friend talk about dinner or his kids or some television show, when suddenly you feel it — nothing big, nothing painful, just the intense and pure realization that none of this is happening and still all of it is awful. Then back to the game! Or you might be watching a ball float off in a long arc, passing by the sun into the distance, and as you admire it, the feeling might come over you that, shit, I could just smash my face with this club and nothing would change, not the whole swirling universe and all of the cosmos, sure, but really in the end, not my family or my small little world, nothing at all would really change if I too just flew off in some pointless arc to nowhere, hole in one, eagle, bogey, whatever, and really, that’s what’s already happening, there’s no reason to speculate, you are that ball, you are flying away, you are headed ultimately into some random green expanse at the center of which is a shallow hole where you will be dropped and forgotten. Sure, that happens sometimes, but really, the rest of the time, this is just a fantastic golf course, and the challenge level is good for both beginners and experts. Also, it’s just beautiful, especially in the Spring.
Dolan might be the Slavoj Zizek of the Google Review.
(I mean this stylistically, the “Now don’t get me wrong’s” the enthusiastic jump back or forward, the simple questions answered with the most absurd possibility being clearly the most possible, the insights you weren’t expecting from the obvious crushing Real, and not in terms of politics or sometimes being a ridiculous wanker. Anyway, go read more.)

Today’s Conclusions, 7/25/11

  • You should feel a bit foolish when you think that the weather reflects your mood. Not that you shouldn’t stop feeling that way from time to time. Or all the time. Or every goddamned moment. But you should feel foolish about such ridiculous thoughts too.

  • There are plenty of reasons to hate Google+, but the best one is all the Google homers who won’t shut the fuck up about Google+ on there.

  • Can’t decide what’s worse, Google homers or Democratic Party homers. I know someone who’s both…

  • I’ve been thinking a lot about the nature of my knowledge.

Dog day 5.3: I found this dog in the Google Street View of the Pompeii ruins. This same dog appears in at least three other spots/moments of the street view sweep of the amphitheater - here s/he is trotting straight up to the camera truck.

This dog day is dedicated to dogs on their own reconnaissance. See previous dog days and dogs in general.

Also see Google street animals by Jon Rafman and Michael Wolf

Pompeii is for the dogs.

Librarians More Important Than Ever

Librarians not only provide patrons with accurate answers, but unlike search engine algorithms they help people arrive at the right questions.

via the poorly titled WNYC/NPR story “Librarians Gone Wild” … Librarians (and Archivists!) are a richer resource than an algorithm will ever be. Librarians in particular provide services that go a lot deeper than just books, especially for the economically disadvantaged. And yet this is another service that is seeing huge cuts across the country.

Furthermore, Librarians and Archivists are a helluva lot more concerned with (and will fight for!) your personal privacy and privacy of requests (unlike, quite obviously, the Google).

So support your local library!!
