Boxing match between Roy Campbell and Dick Hyland, Steveston, 1913 Source: WJ Cairns, City of Vancouver Archives #Sp P98.1 Via pasttensevancouver

Check out the condition of those two mugs. Pure brutality.

pretty interesting, this. First of all, pretty sure it’s Ray Campbell, not Roy (I trust BoxRec.com more than I do the Vancouver Archives). 2nd: Being 1913 these guys are among the first official Welterweights (my “walking around” weight class). 3rd: Frustrating that they don’t identify which fighter is which. Campbell won the fight but you can see both hands getting raised. I assume the fellow on the far right is the ref, but….. Yeah, this is a story.
Ednote: Vancouver Archives got at me to help them to correct this. nice.

Yeah, put a little birdhouse in your soul. But your soul’s a desolate, off-season orchard you’re lucky to glimpse through a fog
